At DM Patterson Construction, we bring 70+ years of experience to residential and commercial construction. We take pride in quality workmanship, clear communication, and delivering projects that meet our clients' needs.
A new build is the clearest test of a contractor. There is no existing house to hide behind: the framing, the roof line, the millwork and the finish are all ours. That is exactly why we like the work. We build new homes and new commercial buildings across Victoria and the Saanich Peninsula, on flat lots and on the steep, rocky sites that make up most of what is left to build on here.

Timber frame and exposed structure
Heavy timber posts and beams, exposed rafters and cedar ceilings. Structure that is meant to be seen has to be cut and set accurately, because nothing about it can be corrected with drywall afterwards.

Difficult sites
Sloped lots, rock, tight access and island logistics. Three generations of building here means we know what a hard site actually costs to build on, and we would rather tell you before you buy it than after.

Consultation
We look at the site and the drawings with you and talk through what is realistic for the lot, the budget and the timeline.

Estimate and plan
You get a clear estimate and a build schedule, so you know the sequence and the cost before the excavator arrives.

Build
We coordinate trades, inspections and deliveries, manage the schedule and budget, and keep you updated throughout.

Final walkthrough
We walk the finished home with you and deal with anything outstanding before you take it over.

Do you build custom homes on Vancouver Island?
Yes. We build new custom homes across Victoria, the Southern Gulf Islands and surrounding communities, from straightforward family homes to timber frame builds on difficult sloped sites.
Can you build on a sloped or difficult lot?
A lot of the land left on the peninsula and the Gulf Islands is steep, rocky or awkward to access. We have built on those sites for three generations, and we will tell you honestly what a lot will cost to build on before you commit to it.
Do you work with our architect and designer?
Yes. We build from your drawings and coordinate with your architect, designer and engineer through the build. If you do not have a design team yet, we can point you toward people we have worked with on the island.
How long does a new build take?
It depends on the size of the home, the site and the permitting authority. We give you a realistic schedule with the estimate rather than an optimistic one, and we keep you updated as each stage completes.
